How to Customize Folder Scanning Preferences in Picasa
I am a fan of Picasa and have been using it for a long time. Not only is Picasa an excellent photo manager and editor, but it also has an excellent viewer.
If you have worked with Picasa before, you may have noticed the two options it offers after installation. You can either limit Picasa’s scan to the “My Documents” folder or have complete control over all the photographs on your hard disk.
If your photos are only in the “My Pictures” folder, selecting the first option solves the problem. However, if you have a scattered collection of snapshots, you should choose the second option.
Customizing the Folder Scanner
Step 1: Launch Picasa and click on “Tools” –> “Folder Manager”
Step 2: In the folder manager on the left side, you will see the directory listing of your computer. Select a folder and choose one of the following actions:
– Move the folder
– Scan the folder
– Remove the folder.
Scan Once: Enable this option to scan the folder only once. It will add all pictures and videos from the directory at that instance. However, any future addition or deletion of files from the folder will not be reflected in Picasa. Remove from Picasa: Excludes the folder from Picasa library permanently. Scan Always: This privilege allows real-time scanning of the directory as long as Picasa runs in the background. Any addition or deletion of media files will instantly be reflected in Picasa.
You will see a section called “watched folders” which contains the library and is similar to the “Scan Always” attribute.
If you want to tag faces while scanning, enable the “Face Detection” option.
The final step is to press the Ok button.
Note: You can also right click on a folder in Picasa and select “Remove from Picasa” to exclude it.
From now on, you have complete control over the folders (and pictures) you want Picasa to import.
