Facebook recently released a new read-later service for its web and app users. Unlike previous launches, this one was relatively low-key. The feature is valuable for Facebook, as it enhances user engagement and provides a better service. Notably, Canada has the highest concentration of active Facebook users.

Facebook’s news feed is intelligently arranged based on algorithms that adapt to the user, sometimes subjecting them to thought experiments, and not in chronological order. A story that is currently at the top may still be there in two hours or it may not be there at all.

This arrangement makes it a bit more difficult to find Facebook posts later on. Luckily, you can easily save any kind of link, pages, places, movies, TV, and music to Facebook using the new Save feature. However, pictures and videos are not supported at this time.

In essence, Save functions as a mini Pocket/Instapaper for the Facebook world.

Saving On Facebook

Facebook Save can be accessed on the web and through the official apps. Saving content is also made easy through these platforms.

If you see a link you want to refer to later on the web, click the down arrow button on the top right corner. Then, select the “Save…” option and the link will be saved.

Same goes for any page. You can select Save from the three dotted icon. It’s the first option.

Saving on mobile is similar for links. Tap the same down arrow icon for options to see the Save button.

When visiting a page on your phone, you’ll see the “Save” button next to the like button.

Viewing And Managing Saved Content

On the web, you’ll see a new “Saved” option in the favorites panel. All your saved content can be accessed from here. On mobile apps, the same option is located on the “More” page.

Saved content is organized by categories, such as links, places, movies, TV shows, books, etc. This categorization is useful when browsing through past posts. Currently, there is no search function, but it is hoped that one will be added in the future.

To remove something from your saved tab, simply press the X button. The deleted content will be moved to the Archive panel, where you can choose to unarchive it if desired.

Best Use Case Scenario

I don’t think Facebook Save will replace Pocket or Instapaper. However, I see value in the service. A lot of media is recommended to me on Facebook. It would be great to save a TV show or book without using Evernote. The same goes for places. Every cafe and restaurant has a Facebook page these days. Saving places you want to visit is convenient, and accessing important content is easy with the different tabs for places, links, movies, etc.
