How to Restrict Wi-Fi or Data Access for Android Games
Most Android games today are synced with servers in real-time and require constant internet connection. When connected to Wi-Fi, there is no need to worry since wireless ISPs provide ample data for playing the game. However, if you switch from Wi-Fi to limited cellular data, the situation changes. These games consume a significant amount of bandwidth, quickly depleting data and resulting in long-term costs.
Now, let’s discuss Android games which are usually played on full screens. Due to a weak or no internet connection on Wi-Fi, the phone may switch to mobile data without notification. This can be especially difficult to detect while on full screen and may lead to consequences if not realized in time.
Therefore, today I will introduce a simple Android firewall app that allows you to restrict games on your Android device to Wi-Fi data only, disabling the use of cellular data completely. Let’s take a look.
How to Block Android Games on Cellular Data
To complete this task, download NoRoot Data Firewall from the Play Store on your Android device. The app works on all devices running Android 4.0 or higher and does not require root access.
After the app initializes, you will be asked to grant permission to create a VPN connection. Don’t worry, it will be a mock connection to monitor your device’s internet. You will then see a list of installed apps with cellular and Wi-Fi icons. Tap on both icons and select Allow Connection. Otherwise, you will be prompted for confirmation when an app attempts to connect to the internet.
To block games from using cellular data, find them in the list and tap the cellular icon. Then select “Restrict Data.”
From now on, all games configured in the firewall settings will be blocked in cellular data and will only work on Wi-Fi. You can minimize the app and it will work in the background. In case you reboot your phone and don’t see the VPN icon in the status bar, just manually open the app.
Additional Features
The app offers additional features that make it ideal as a standalone firewall. Some of these features include:
1. Blocking background data for apps connected to Wi-Fi or 3G, reducing overall data usage.
2. Receiving notifications when apps try to connect to the internet if internet access hasn’t been granted by default.
3. Creating different profiles for Roaming and Gaming, allowing for easy rule changes with a single tap.
4. Setting up a night mode for restricted night data to conserve battery life.
5. Viewing detailed graphical usage statistics for apps on cellular and Wi-Fi data.
Conclusion
These are just a few highlighted features of the app. Try it out to block data for certain apps on cellular or Wi-Fi and gain complete control over your phone’s bandwidth. If you have any doubts about getting the right settings, feel free to comment and we’ll be happy to assist you.
