How to Disable Safari Private Browsing on Mac

The Private mode in Safari on Mac not only helps you surf the internet without recording your browsing activity offline, but also prevents web trackers from profiling you. However, there’s a flip-side.

If you lend your Mac to someone, you may not know what they were doing online. This becomes a bigger issue with kids because of the harmful websites out there. To address this, you may want to disable Safari’s Private browsing windows on your Mac. If you have macOS 10.15 Catalina, you can easily do this using Screen Time. Here’s how:

Use Screen Time to Disable Safari Private Browsing

Screen Time debuted on the iPhone and iPad with iOS 12. It allows you to monitor activities on all your iOS devices and includes restrictions on web content. The adult-content restriction not only blocks NSFW content but also disables Safari’s Private Browsing tabs.

With macOS Catalina, you can also use Screen Time on your Mac with similar features. Follow these steps to set up Screen Time and activate the adult-content restriction to disable Private Browsing in Safari.

Note:

Step 1: Open the Apple menu and click System Preferences.

Other Devices and Screen Time Passcodes

If you have other macOS or iOS devices linked to your Apple ID, your restrictions will also apply to them by default. To prevent this, click Options in the bottom-left corner of the Screen Time panel and uncheck the Share Across Devices box.

You can also set up a Screen Time Passcode on this screen to prevent unauthorized access to your Screen Time settings. To do that, check the Use Screen Time Passcode box. If you already have a Passcode for your iPhone or iPad, you can use it instead, as long as the Share Across Devices box is checked.

Disable Safari Private Browsing in Guest Mode

By default, macOS Catalina imposes adult content filters when logged in as a guest user. That means Private browsing in Safari is disabled. But if that doesn’t appear to be the case, then here’s what you must do. Start by clicking the Users and Groups option within System Preferences.

Remote Screen Time Management

Screen Time for macOS Catalina allows you to remotely disable Private browsing in Safari. This is useful for managing a family member’s Mac. To do this, add the person using the Family Sharing option in System Preferences. Then, go to the Screen Time panel, select the family member’s profile from the pull-down menu under your profile picture.
