How To Convert Currency using Safari on iOS in Real Time

As I’ve said before, I struggle with math but still rely on apps and services. I use expense managers for an accurate view and visual calculators to simplify calculations.

A significant portion of my day is spent converting prices to dollars or pounds. I’m not a shopaholic, just an avid tech reader. When I see the price of a new gadget, I mentally calculate the conversion. For example, the new iPad costs $500, which is equivalent to thirty thousand Indian rupees.

When dealing with figures, it’s not always easy to estimate in tens or hundreds. The exchange rate is also constantly fluctuating. For example, at the time of writing this, the exchange rate is 62 Rupees for 1 US dollar, not 60 Rupees. Instead of relying solely on my own calculations, I use a currency converter. I can use Alfred, Spotlight on my Mac, or even a simple Google search to find the current exchange rate. These tools are invaluable for quick and accurate conversions.

Over time, I’ve discovered many methods for converting currencies, and recently, I’ve found two more. One method is to automatically convert any written currency on a webpage in Safari for iOS to Indian Rupees (this works for all major currencies). Another option is to use a Notification Center widget. These new tools make currency conversion even more convenient and accessible.

The app we’ll be using is Stacks ($2.99), a fully fledged currency converter with a live exchange rate. The app was recently updated with a Safari extension and a Notification Center widget, improving its functionality significantly.

Cool Tip: Notification Center widgets and extension support are the best things to happen to iOS in quite a while. Learn about extensions and check out our list of NC widgets to know more.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, go to Safari and click the Share button. In the bottom menu, swipe to the right, click More, and enable Stacks.

Go to the web page with the foreign currency price. Select “Stacks” from the share menu. From the popup, choose the output currency.

The app comes with a NC widget. Swipe down to the bottom of the Today view, click “Edit” and add the “Stacks” widget. Now you’ll see two currencies. You can change them by tapping the button. The base currency is USD and the converted currency is based on your region. You can also swap them using the circle button.

The NC widget has a keypad that you can bring up. Typing in the numbers will convert it according to the current exchange rate in the Notification Center. You don’t need to open the app.
