How to Change APK File Names and Icons Easily

A few days ago, I wrote an article on how Android users can clone an app on their phone and run two instances of that app. The cloned app had the same APK name and icon, making it difficult for the user to launch the correct app. To simplify things, I decided to change the name and icon of one of the apps using an APK editor I had previously discussed.

You can still do it that way, but as the app runs on Java, it was giving a hard time to many users. Most of them were getting errors while attempting to change the app name and icon, thus the need for a new alternative.

I managed to land on the APK Icon Editor open source application page and when I installed and tried it, I was impressed. Let me show you how you can change app icons and names using this app.

After downloading APK Editor, installing the application is simple. Just follow the on-screen instructions to set it up. Make sure you have the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on your computer. If you’re unsure, you can download and install it now. Feel free to re-install if you already have it.

Now that the app is installed, launch it. First, change the app’s name. To start, drag and drop an APK file on the editor and wait for it to read and unpack the package. If there are any errors, check the current mode on the top-right of the program and change it to QuaZIP.

Once the app is read, click on the Properties tab to change the name. While changing the name, the app mode should be Apktool instead of QuaZIP. Once you have changed the name, pack the APK again by clicking on the option Pack APK.

Once you’ve renamed the APK, repack it before changing the icon. Since the two features require different encoders, they should be handled separately. Ensure that the mode is set to “QuaZIP” when modifying the icons.

After parsing the file, the app will display icons of various dimensions based on the target Android device. For instance, low-end phones will use MDPI or HDPI icons, while tablets will utilize XXHDPI.

To change an icon, right-click on it and select an image file to replace it. The app will auto-resize the new icon for you. If you don’t want to completely change the icon, you can add color effects to make it look different. This is much simpler than replacing the entire icon.

Finally, repack the APK, transfer it to the phone, and install it. If you encounter signature errors during installation, first uninstall the app from your phone, then proceed with installing the modified version.

Note: The tool also allows you to modify the version number and version code, but it’s recommended to leave these unchanged unless you have a good understanding of what you’re doing.

APK Editor is a user-friendly tool for modifying APK files. It allows you to change the names and icons of APKs. It supports PNG, ICO, GIF, JPG, and BMP image formats. You can also sign and optimize APKs with this tool. The project is open source and available for contributions on the developer’s Github page. If you have any doubts, please contact us.
