How To Block Certain Websites In Chrome Using BlockIt

We have discussed parental controls in Windows and web filters in Windows 7 that restrict access to inappropriate web content.

However, if you are using a Windows version without parental controls and Chrome as the default browser, you can install an extension called “BlockIt” to block specific websites.

Here’s how:

(UPDATE: The extension is no longer available in the Chrome extensions gallery. You can try downloading it from Softpedia. We also recommend checking out our posts on privacy and security for more tools.)

Install the add-on. After installation, you won’t find any button or option in the extension bar. Type chrome://extensions/ in the address bar (check the screenshot below) to display all installed extensions. Go to the BlockIt extension and click the “Options” button next to it.

Enter the websites you want to block. For example, I blocked YouTube and Facebook. After entering the URLs, click “Block”.

To unblock a website, delete the URL and click “Block” again. Your changes will be saved.

Setting a password is easy. Scroll below the fold on the BlockIt page. You’ll find an option to change the access password.

In the current password field, don’t type anything. Type your new password in the New Password field and confirm it. Click “Change.”

Now go back to the browser address bar and enter the URL of the website you blocked. The page appears, showing the message “The web page is blocked by the administrator.”

If you want to access the website, click on the “Change settings” link and type your password. It will redirect you to the option page where you can unblock it.

That’s how you can block any website in Google Chrome. This should also work in the incognito mode of Chrome if you are using the beta version.
