How to Backup Contacts From Android and iPhone to Google Drive

We still use a smartphone to call people, and for that, we need their number. Today, contacts in the phonebook have changed the game so we don’t need to remember anyone’s number, especially not of friends and family. The problem arises when you delete a contact accidentally, reset or lose your phone. Your contacts are lost forever unless you have taken a backup of contacts or synced them in such situations. Here we shall tell you how to backup contacts to Google Drive from Android and iPhone.

Before we move to the steps, it’s essential to understand the difference between backup and sync. So we will cover that first. Once you understand what you will do, it will be easier to implement it.

Let’s get started.

Backup vs. Sync for Contacts

When creating a backup of contacts, a non-modifiable file is typically created. To reflect any changes, you must create a separate file or update the backup and save them. Any modifications made to the data will not be updated on connected devices if you backup a file.

Sync, on the other hand, automatically updates any changes made to contacts without any action required from you. Thus, if you edit a contact on phone 1, the same change will be reflected on phone 2 if both phones are synced using the same account.

You can achieve this in two ways.

Method 1: Manually Backup Contacts to Google Drive

One of the easiest and safest ways to backup contacts from any Android phone to Google Drive is by creating a VCF file. The file stores all contact information in an organized manner and needs to be manually added to Google Drive.

After exporting contacts, you can manually import them on any phone. The steps are similar for all Android phones, and we will cover the Google Contacts app and Samsung Contacts app for clarity.

Backup Contacts to Drive From Google Contacts App

Open Google Contacts app on your phone.

Tap the three-bar icon in the left sidebar and select Settings.

Method 2: Backup Contacts to Google Drive Directly

In the method described above, you need to manually back up your contacts. However, if you want your phone to automatically back up your contacts and other data on a regular basis, such as installed apps and call history, in order to facilitate the transition to a new phone, you can follow these steps.

First, open Settings and go to System. Then, tap on Backup and enable the toggle next to Back up to Google Drive. If you have a Samsung phone, navigate to Settings > Accounts and backup > Backup and restore, and then tap on Back up my data under Google Account. To restore your contacts, go to Settings > Google > Set up and restore, and tap on restore contacts.

Please note that while this method will automatically back up your contacts on a regular basis, you cannot be certain if the backup has been completed. If you prefer to back up and export your contacts just once, it’s recommended to use the first method.
