In a previous article, we showed how to backup Facebook data using Mozilla Firefox and the ArchiveFB plugin. However, this method only applies to Facebook and doesn’t work for other services like Google.

On 28th June, Google launched Google Takeout, a new service aimed at solving this issue. It is a free service that enables users to download their data from Google products onto their computer in the form of an archive. Takeout is the initial offering from Google’s Data Liberation Front team, a group dedicated to simplifying the process of transferring data to and from Google products.

How to Use Google Takeout

Visit the Google Takeout homepage and sign in to your Google account. Before you can backup any data, select the services you want to perform the task on.

Pros and Cons

All downloaded archive data is portable and open, making data export to other services easy. However, downloading data from Gmail is currently not available.

My Verdict

Google Takeout is a valuable service for backing up data from Google servers. Despite not receiving much attention due to the simultaneous launch of Google Plus, it has great potential and should be utilized by all Google users.
