Disable Windows 8 Defender Before Installing New Antivirus

Windows 8 has a built-in antivirus called Windows Defender, which is essentially the free antivirus from Microsoft, also known as Microsoft Security Essentials from Windows 7.

Microsoft claims that Windows Defender is sufficient for basic protection on a home computer, but I personally don’t like it. While the detection rate is good, the removal rate is pathetic. It took the tool 2 minutes and 33 seconds to clean a test virus file, and it required excessive resources.

Note: I am not encouraging you to stop using Windows Defender. It is your decision.

You cannot install two antivirus software on a computer as they conflict with each other. If you plan to install a third-party security solution on your Windows 8 system, you will need to disable the Windows Defender that’s natively present. Uninstalling Defender is difficult, but you can disable it instead.

Disabling the Defender with Windows Services is simple. Launch the Start Menu, search for Services, and click on View local services to open Windows Services.
