Last week was dedicated to Windows 8. We talked about testing the developer preview as a virtual machine, 10 new features Windows 8 will bring along with an in-depth view of the new Metro UI and Task Manager.

Though Windows 8 has pleasantly surprised everyone with its amazing features, nothing is perfect. In less than a fortnight of the developer version release, programmers have started finding some shortcomings, glitches, and consequently, have started working on tweaking tools.

Metro UI Tweaker for Windows 8, developed by Lee Whittington from The Windows Club, is a nifty tool to tweak the Metro Start Menu settings that are unavailable to users in Windows 8 directly.

After downloading and extracting the file, run the .exe file. The blue window will be divided into three modules. Let’s take a look at each of them.

Metro Options

While discussing the 10 new features of Windows 8, we mentioned the Metro user interface and ribbon Windows Explorer. These features are amazing and improve user interaction with the operating system.

Of course, not everyone is comfortable with the changes. Some prefer the old Windows interface and explorer looks over the new Metro UI. With this tool, you can easily toggle the Metro Start Menu and Explorer Ribbon on or off.

There are four options that cover all possible combinations of the Metro UI and Explorer Ribbon. Simply select the desired option and click apply.

If you have installed Windows 8, you may have noticed that the Metro Start Menu does not offer a direct shutdown option. Instead, you can only log off and return to the lock screen. From there, you can select the restart or shutdown option.

Using the tool, we can add these options directly to the Start menu. After checking, applying, and restarting your computer, you will see buttons like restart and shutdown on the Metro Start Menu.

Adding Applications/Files to the Metro Start Menu

When installing Windows 8, after the first boot, you will see a green background with pinned apps. This is the new start menu.

By default, any Windows or Metro application you install will be pinned to your Metro Start Menu. However, if you want to pin an application that doesn’t have an installer (like this tweaker), you can use this tool.

Simply browse for the executable application or file and click “Add to Start Menu.”

Please note that you cannot add folders to the Metro Start Menu.

Download the tweaker to customize the Metro user interface of your new Windows.
