Create Beautiful Panoramas with Autostitch

If you’re an amateur photographer on a budget, you’ve likely struggled with fitting the entire scenery into your photos. While many cameras now have a ‘panorama’ mode, it only allows for horizontal shots and the accompanying software may not effectively merge the images. What you need is a program that can seamlessly stitch together side-by-side or above-and-below scenes into a single wide-angle photo.

Autostitch is a small and easy-to-use application that can seamlessly merge photos. It is free for individual use and compatible with all versions of Windows.

Here’s a simple demonstration: at the Paris Air Show, I wanted to capture the entire Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger plane. However, I had to move far away from it to fit it all in the frame.

As a result, people kept blocking my shot. To get a close-up of the entire plane, I approached the fence and followed these steps:

1. Take Multiple Photos

Click two or more photos that have overlap. The overlap can be generous because Autostitch can handle any number of photos. I only needed two this time.

The photos don’t need to be level with each other, as can be seen by the body of the plane. The entire wing can be seen in both photos, which is fine.

Run the application and go to the “Edit” menu.{APPLICATION}{EDIT}

In the Edit menu, there are options that can be used by both beginners and advanced users. The most useful options are the size (1) and system memory (2).

The size option determines the output image size and can be set to 100%. The memory option sets the amount of RAM to be used – increase this value for faster stitching if you have more RAM.

3. Choose your files.

Select files from the “File” menu. Select all files at once by dragging your mouse or pressing Ctrl on your keyboard. In a few seconds, you will have the raw version of the finished product. It will look like:

As you can see, the subject is in your frame, but with black edges. This happens due to missing overlap lines and because you are trying to fit a curved world view into a rectangular photo.

Use Irfanview to sharpen the edges of your composite image. (Click the image below for full size).

Autostitch works on vertical wide angles. Take photos with your tilted camera, and there is no need to rotate them on the computer. Simply rotate the final image and you’re done.

Furthermore, Autostitch can convert multiple overlapping shots into one amazing photo. Take a look at the following example photos:
