Check If You Are Getting Right Internet Speed with NetSpeedMonitor

I’m writing this article at a café, working on a Wi-Fi connection. In my country (and maybe in a few other places), Wi-Fi broadband is notorious for fluctuating speeds. As a full-time web worker, I need a consistent internet speed.

NetSpeedMonitor is a lightweight network monitoring toolbar for Windows. It works on computers running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. One of the things I immediately liked about this traffic monitoring software is that it requires no additional drivers and works immediately after installation, without any extra configurations.

NetSpeedMonitor, available from the taskbar, can be accessed by right-clicking and selecting the NetSpeedMonitor toolbar. From there, you can configure the settings to monitor your preferred network interface, whether it be a fixed line internet connection or a data card. These settings can also be configured during installation.

Several options control the tooltip layout for real-time monitoring data. You can modify the font and specify alternate names for downloads and uploads. The taskbar shows the net speed for both upload and download, while hovering over the location reveals a larger tooltip with the internet speed. The tooltip also presents traffic statistics by session, day, and month. To stop monitoring, double-click the toolbar. In the configuration settings, you can select the unit of measurement for gauging network speed. Data traffic is logged in a SQLite Database file and can be exported for analytic reporting if desired.

Power users can access Connections on the quick access toolbar. The monitor provides a detailed listing of TCP and UDP endpoints. You can view local endpoints, names of remote servers, and the state of TCP connections. You can then choose to kill a process with a right click.
