5 Best Dark Mode Extensions for Firefox on PC
Dark mode is currently a popular and enduring feature. Recently, Google added a dark theme to Google News and Keep, and iOS 13 will support a system-wide dark mode on the iPhone. Whether viewed as a gimmick or a trend, dark mode is here to stay.
When it comes to Firefox, we don’t need to wait for Mozilla’s implementation because there are many extensions available. These dark mode extensions not only give your browser a pleasing dark tone but also make late-night browsing easier on the eyes. If you’re looking for the best dark mode or night mode extensions for Firefox, here are a few you should consider.
How to Enable Dark Mode in Firefox
Before we proceed, let’s learn how to enable dark mode extensions in Firefox.
Step 1: Click on the three-dash icon at the top-right corner, and select Add-ons.
Step 2: Search for a theme from the list and click Add to Firefox when prompted for confirmation.
You can choose to make the extension available in Private windows by checking the checkbox and hitting the Okay button. That’s it.
To disable an extension temporarily, right-click on the extension and choose Manage. Then, select Disable.
1. Dark Mode
If you’re looking for a simple dark mode for Firefox, Dark Mode is one of the easiest extensions to use. This no-frills extension lets you switch to dark mode with ease. Just tap the Moon-shaped icon on the toolbar to switch between light and dark mode.
The theme is browser-wide, so sites like Wikipedia and Google Search have a black backdrop. The extension works well, but there may be occasional image inversion with banners. However, Dark Mode cannot be customized. You cannot whitelist specific websites or adjust brightness. Additionally, there is no keyboard shortcut to toggle the extension.
2. Dark Theme for Google
If you spend too much time on Google, the Dark Theme for Google extension is perfect for you. Unlike the previous extension, this one only works on Search, Image Search, and Translate.
The extension is highly customizable. You can customize the color of links and backgrounds, among other settings. Just remember which color represents what. To make changes, click on Manage Extensions. After making changes, save and refresh the page.
Dark Theme for Google is equipped with a timer, allowing your browser’s appearance to change after 7 in the evening. This feature is both convenient and impressive. Furthermore, this extension functions effectively on the aforementioned pages, with minimal image inversion problems.
3. Dark Reader
Dark Reader stands out for its extensive customization options. Users can adjust brightness settings for individual websites, allowing for a personalized reading experience. This feature is particularly useful when perusing our detailed comparison posts, as users can easily modify the brightness to their preference. Dark Reader then remembers the chosen values, ensuring a consistent and tailored experience.
You don’t have to go to the extension icon to activate it. Use the Alt+Shift+D shortcut instead.
If you want a site with interactive videos and images to remain unchanged, you can add it to the Not Invert List. Go to the Site List tab, select Not Invert Listed, and add the URLs.
Note that either the Invert Listed option or the Not Invert Listed option will work at a time.
Sometimes, you may prefer a basic extension with customization options. If you agree, you’ll appreciate Dark Night Mode. It offers a user-friendly interface and enhances the reading experience on Firefox.
This extension allows you to choose the screen brightness level for your website. Simply adjust the slider to your liking. Additionally, there is a Whitelist This Site toggle feature.
5. Night Mode Pro
Night Mode Pro is an extension that inverts web page colors. It offers keyboard shortcuts for productivity purposes. It allows users to whitelist or remove web pages.
The sliders for brightness and hue are the cherry on top.
My only disappointment was that the color inversions were odd for certain websites. Thankfully, the sliders take care of it.
Welcome the Dark Knight
Which extension from the list is your favorite? I found the keyboard shortcuts of Night Mode Pro impressive, but the image inversions were disappointing.
