4 Best Ways to Add Ebooks to Kindle App From Mobile and Desktop
Amazon Kindle is an excellent mobile ebook reader app. It offers features such as a dictionary, Wikipedia support, notes, and cross-device read position sync. Similar to Google Play Books, you can read books not only from the Amazon library but also add your own digital books to the Kindle app. Let’s explore how to add books, such as PDF or Word documents, to the Kindle app on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, and Mac.
Amazon allows you to add books to the Kindle app using the Send to Kindle feature. There are various methods available: you can send it via email, use the share menu on Android and iOS, or use the Send to Kindle app on your PC.
In this article, we will explain all the ways to upload ebooks to the Kindle app on mobile and PC, as well as how to delete books from Kindle. Let’s begin.
Important Things to Know
Before we discuss the methods, there are a few things to consider.
The Kindle app supports the following file types:
– Microsoft Word (.DOC, .DOCX)
– HTML (.HTML, .HTM)
– RTF (.RTF)
– JPEG (.JPEG, .JPG)
– Kindle Format (.MOBI, .AZW)
– GIF (.GIF)
– PNG (.PNG)
– BMP (.BMP)
– PDF (.PDF)
If you’re interested, familiarize yourself with the differences between ebook formats like EPUB, Mobi, PDF, etc.
Only the PDF, Mobi, and AZW formats will be uploaded without alteration. Other formats will be automatically converted to the Kindle format, which may result in some loss of the original layout.
Notes, highlights, dictionary, and similar features are only available for Mobi and Kindle books. PDF files in Kindle do not support these features. You can view your notes and highlights online at read.amazon.com/notebook.
Books or documents added to your Kindle library are private and only visible to you.
Books downloaded from the Kindle library will automatically appear on all your devices. Remember to refresh or sync the Kindle app.
One of the easiest ways to transfer ebooks to your Kindle app is by using the Send to Kindle feature. Amazon offers a unique email ID linked to your devices wherever the Kindle app is installed. You need to email the book to that email address from your registered Amazon email ID or other approved address. You can mail it from your phone or a computer. The method works from any platform.
Note: The ebook you want to add in Kindle should be downloaded on your computer or mobile before attempting to attach the document.
Here are the steps in detail:
Step 1: Find Kindle Email
The first step is finding your unique Kindle email address. To do this, open the Kindle app on your mobile phone and tap on the More tab at the bottom. On Android, go to App Settings, and on iPhone and iPad, go to Settings under More.
To find your Send to Kindle email address, note it down or copy it if your device supports that.
Step 2: Send Ebook as an Email
Once you have the Kindle email address, open your email. Use the same email address registered with your Amazon account to send the mail. If you don’t remember it, open the Kindle app and tap on the More tab. You will see your Amazon email address. You can add other email addresses as well.
To upload an ebook to Kindle using the mobile email app, follow these steps:
1. Open the Gmail app and create a new email.
2. Type in the Kindle email address.
3. Leave the Subject and body areas empty.
4. Tap on the attachment icon and select the ebook.
5. Send the email.
If you want to convert your PDF files to the Mobi format, simply enter “Convert” in the email subject line. Converting the PDF to Mobi gives you control over font size, formatting styles, notes, and highlights. Keep in mind that you may lose some of the original layout.
Step 3: View in Kindle
To access your book on the Kindle app, ensure you have an active Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. Open the app on your device and navigate to the Library tab. Your book will appear within a few minutes. If it doesn’t, refresh the app by swiping down on the screen or go to More > Sync to sync the books.
How to Customize Send to Kindle Email Settings
Amazon offers various settings to customize the Kindle experience. You can view all your Kindle email addresses in one place, add a new personal email address to send emails, and enable document archiving. Enabling the document archiving setting adds emailed documents to your Kindle library, making them available on all your devices.
To customize these settings, open the Amazon website and sign in to your account. Hover over Account & lists at the top and select Manage Your Content & Devices.
Click on the Preferences tab at the top.
Scroll down and expand Personal Document Settings. Here you will find all the settings related to Kindle.
On Android and iPhone/iPad, you can add supported ebook file formats using the share menu.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Keep the ebook in the local folder on your device.
Step 2: On Android, open any file manager and navigate to your ebook. Touch and hold the ebook. You will get the share option. On some file managers, you may have to tap the three-dot icon to reveal the share icon. Basically, tap the share icon. From the sharing menu, select Send to Kindle.
To send an ebook from an iPhone or iPad to Kindle, open the Files app, locate the ebook, and tap on it. Then, select Share and find Kindle in the share options. If you can’t find it, tap on the three-dot icon or More and choose Kindle.
Step 3: A pop-up menu will appear. To have the ebook on all your devices, toggle Save in Kindle Library. Then, click Send. For a PDF file, you’ll be prompted to convert to the Kindle format. Choose yes or no.
Step 4: Upload the file and wait for it to complete. You will receive a confirmation message when it’s done. Open the Kindle app to view your book. Refresh the app if the book is not immediately visible.
Method 3: Copy Paste (Android Only)
Another way to add files to the Kindle app is by pasting the ebook into the Kindle folder. This method only works on Android devices.
Note: There is a drawback to this method. Your books will only appear on the device where they were placed in the Kindle folder, not on other devices.
To use this method, open a file manager app on your Android phone. Find the location of the ebook file. Hold it down to select it, then choose Copy. Go to the Main storage of your Android device in the file manager and navigate to the Kindle folder. It’s located in the same place as your Download folder. Open the Kindle folder and paste your file. Finally, open the Kindle app to view the ebook.
Method 4: From PC
To add files to Kindle app from Mac or Windows computer, install the Send to Kindle app. Once installed, you can add documents and ebooks in three ways.
First, locate and right-click on the file. Choose Send to Kindle.
To send the book, select the devices, enable the Archive document, and click Send. Wait for the file to upload, and you will be notified. Open the Kindle app on your mobile devices to read the book from your PC.
Secondly, open your ebook and select Sent to Kindle in the print window. Lastly, drag and drop the files into the Send to Kindle app.
How to Delete Books From the Kindle App
To remove the books you’ve uploaded to Kindle, touch and hold the book in the Kindle app’s Library section. On iPhone and iPad, you’ll see the Remove from Library option. Tap it.
To remove a book on Android, tap the three-dot icon and select Remove from library.
Bonus: How to Find and Convert Ebooks to Mobi or Kindle Format
You can find ebooks on various sites. Check our list of free ebook sites. When you find a book, download it in Mobi or Kindle format for better compatibility. If those formats are not available, convert PDF, Epub, or other formats to Kindle format using software like Calibre. Online tools like Zamzar can also help. Alternatively, put “convert” in the email subject as described above.
A Lot Can Happen With Kindle
