7 Ways to Fix Unable to Use WhatsApp on Two Devices on iPhone and Android
If there was one feature WhatsApp users longed for, it was using WhatsApp on two phones. Thankfully, WhatsApp listened and dropped an update that allowed this. However, many users, including us, were unable to use WhatsApp on two devices despite the feature being launched.
Thankfully, we fixed the problem. In this article, we will show you seven methods to successfully link your secondary device to WhatsApp. These methods work for both iPhone and Android, so you’re covered regardless of the platform you’re using.
Let’s start with the most effective method: tweaking a developer option on your Android device.
Note: If you don’t know how to use WhatsApp on two devices, check our guide on using the same WhatsApp account on two phones officially before proceeding with the fixes.
1. Change Minimum DPI Using Developer Options (Android)
Using WhatsApp on two different devices is possible through the linked devices feature. Originally designed for WhatsApp web and desktop apps, this feature is intended for use on larger screens.
If you want to add your WhatsApp account to a second phone but cannot find the option to link devices, you can adjust your phone’s DPI (Dots Per Inch) to make it act like a larger device. However, this can only be done by enabling developer options and is not applicable to iOS devices.
Here’s how to complete the process:
Step 1: Open the Settings app and go to About Device.
Step 2: Tap on Version. Step 3: Tap several times on the Build number until you get a message saying ‘You are now a developer’.
Step 4: Open developer options. Open the ‘Additional Settings’ menu in the settings app.
Step 5: Tap Developer options.
Step 6: Scroll down and tap Smallest Width.
Step 7: Change the value to 600 and confirm.
So, the next time you open WhatsApp on another device, you can easily link your account to it.
2. Update to the Latest Version of WhatsApp
To utilize WhatsApp’s newest features, including the ability to use it on two phones, update to the latest version. Here’s how to update WhatsApp on iPhone and Android:
1. Open WhatsApp on Play Store or App Store.
2. Tap on Update.
There you will be on the latest version of WhatsApp on your device. Now, you should see the option to use WhatsApp on two phones.
3. Use WhatsApp Beta (Android)
WhatsApp has a beta program that allows you to access features that aren’t released to the public. The option to use WhatsApp on two phones might not be available to all users, even if they have the latest version.
In this case, you can try using the beta version of WhatsApp to access the features. Here’s how to download WhatsApp beta. It’s recommended you install WhatsApp Beta on the second phone you want to use WhatsApp on. You can download the .apk file of the latest version of WhatsApp. However, installing the beta version of WhatsApp may only be necessary on the secondary device.
4. Check the Number of Linked Devices
WhatsApp limits the number of devices you can link to their platform. Currently, you can link up to four devices. Therefore, it’s important to check the number of linked devices before adding a new one. Here’s how to do it:
1. Open WhatsApp on your primary device.
2. Tap on the Settings icon at the bottom.
3. Go to Linked Devices and see how many devices are already connected. If the number is less than five, you can add more devices.
5. Check Network Connectivity
If you’re unable to use WhatsApp on two devices, it might be due to a weak network connection. To resolve this, check your network connectivity and try using WhatsApp again.
Make sure your Wi-Fi connection is strong enough, or if you’re using mobile data, ensure you have an active plan.
6. Clear WhatsApp Cache (Android Devices)
Clearing the cache for an application removes junk files that may be causing bugs. Some of these bugs may prevent you from using the feature to link WhatsApp devices. If you are unable to use WhatsApp on two devices, try clearing the WhatsApp cache.
Step 1: Long-tap the WhatsApp icon.
Step 2: Tap App Info.
Step 3: Tap Storage Usage.
Step 4: Clear cache.
7. Reinstall WhatsApp on Secondary Device
Lastly, if none of these methods work, you may try reinstalling WhatsApp on your secondary phone. Using a freshly installed app may erase all the bugs from the previous version. Here’s how to reinstall WhatsApp on your phone.
Note: Do not uninstall WhatsApp on the primary device. You will lose all your chats.
Step 1: Uninstall WhatsApp from your phone.
Step 2: Open WhatsApp on the Play Store or App Store to reinstall it.
If you can’t use WhatsApp on two devices, follow these steps. If you have more questions, check the FAQ section below.
