6 Best Ways to Fix Skype Not Working on iPhone
Skype is one of the best tools for voice and video communication. It works on smartphones and PCs. However, you might run into unexpected issues when using Skype on any device. If you can’t use Skype on your iPhone because the app won’t work, read on for solutions.
If the Skype app crashes on your iPhone or doesn’t load, try these 6 troubleshooting fixes:
1. Update Skype to the latest version.
2. Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
3. Clear some storage space on your iPhone.
4. Force close the Skype app and relaunch it.
5. Restart your iPhone.
6. Reinstall the Skype app from the App Store.
These steps should resolve the issue with Skype on your iPhone.
1. Check Network Connection
How are you trying to connect to Skype? Are you using Wi-Fi or mobile data? Is your data plan active? Is your Wi-Fi router working properly? Also, check if other apps on your iPhone can connect to the internet.
If the issue is with your router, try restarting it or boosting the network signal strength. Alternatively, try other troubleshooting fixes if your iPhone has a Wi-Fi connection but the internet doesn’t work.
If your network connection is fine but Skype still doesn’t work, try other non-network-related troubleshooting fixes.
2. Restart iPhone
Ideally, when Skype crashes on your iPhone, reopening the app is often the first solution that comes to mind. It’s an effective fix for this issue. However, if the app fails to open, restarting your device is recommended. Perhaps Skype isn’t working because you have an older iPhone model with insufficient RAM to run the latest version of the app and other apps simultaneously.
Before restarting your iPhone, you can also try closing other active apps and then relaunching Skype.
3. Update Skype
Sometimes, Skype may not work on your iPhone due to a bug in the app. Software developers monitor these issues and release app updates to fix them. If you’re having trouble with Skype on your iPhone, update the app to the latest version.
To update the app, go to the App Store on your phone, search for Skype, and tap Update. If you don’t see an Update button, you already have the latest version installed.
4. Update iOS
Installing a pending iOS update could fix the issue that is causing the Skype app to not work on your iPhone. Go to the Settings menu on your iPhone and select General > Software Update. Your phone will scan for updates. If there are any, tap ‘Download and Install’ to start the update process.
Scanning and installing iOS updates requires an active internet connection. Connect to Wi-Fi before checking for software updates on your iPhone.
5. Reinstall Skype
Old and corrupt app files and temporary data could cause the Skype app to not work on your iPhone. Delete the app from your device and reinstall it to eliminate the files causing the app to misbehave.
Note: Deleting the Skype app on your iPhone will delete all of the app’s files, not just the old/corrupt files. You will need to download the app and sign in to your Skype account again and redo any personal customization you might have configured within the app.
To uninstall Skype from your iPhone, tap and hold the app icon on the homepage for about 1-2 seconds until the menu options appear. Select Delete App to remove the app and related data from your device.
Launch the iPhone Settings menu and go to General > iPhone Storage > Skype and select Delete App.
6. Check Skype Status
Sometimes, your network, phone, or the Skype app aren’t the problem. If Skype’s servers are down, you wouldn’t be able to use the service on any of your devices. So if your iPhone’s Skype app (or some features) doesn’t work, you should check everything on Skype’s end.
Interestingly, Skype allows users to check the status of its services on its Skype Status page (link below).
Open the page on your browser and check the Skype Status section. If it doesn’t read “Normal service”, then Skype might be down.
To check Skype’s status, use Down Detector. Go to the website to see if Skype’s services are down or unavailable. If there is an issue, you’ll have to wait for Microsoft/Skype to fix it.
